Building NEW Beginnings: Phina Asika’s Journey
Building a Career with the Support of Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto
Relocating to a new country comes with challenges, uncertainties, and the need to rebuild one’s career from the ground up. My journey has been no different. Coming from Africa, where I had built a solid background in political science, business administration, finance, and customer service, I knew that integrating into the Canadian workforce would require dedication, adaptability, and, most importantly, support. That support came from Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto (NEW), an organization that has played a pivotal role in my professional development and confidence as I navigate my career in Canada.
A New Beginning in a New Country
When I arrived in Canada, I was eager to establish myself professionally, but I quickly realized that despite my extensive experience, I needed to gain Canadian work experience, understand the local job market, and build a network. Like many newcomers, I faced obstacles such as credential recognition, unfamiliar hiring processes, and the need for professional connections. Additionally, I struggled with communication skills, which affected my confidence.
Determined to bridge this gap, I sought guidance from Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto. From the moment I connected with their counselors, I felt seen, heard, and supported. They understood my background, aspirations, and the barriers I faced, and they were committed to helping me overcome them.
Guidance and Skill Development
One of the first steps in my journey with NEW was working closely with their dedicated employment counselors. They helped me tailor my resume to the Canadian job market, provided insights on how to navigate job interviews, and introduced me to various professional development opportunities. Through their support, I gained clarity on the job search process and how to position myself as a strong candidate in the competitive Canadian workforce.
Beyond job search assistance, NEW offered invaluable training and workshops that enhanced my professional skills. I participated in courses such as MBA Essentials, Digital Fluency, and other micro-credential programs that significantly upgraded my skill set and strengthened my resume. These programs not only reinforced my technical skills but also improved my communication, making me more articulate and confident in professional settings. The transformation in my communication skills boosted confidence, enabling me to engage effectively with employers and colleagues.
Internship and Practical Experience
One of the most impactful opportunities I received through NEW was an internship placement at their organization. This experience allowed me to gain hands-on exposure to the Canadian workplace, understand employer expectations, and expand my professional network.
During my internship, I had the privilege of shadowing professionals in different roles, which gave me a well-rounded perspective on how various departments function. I honed my administrative skills, improved my customer service expertise, and became familiar with office operations in a Canadian setting. The experience was instrumental in upgrading my Canadian work experience and positioning me for future job opportunities. Most importantly, the internship provided me with firsthand exposure to Canadian workplace culture, which is essential for career growth.
Mentorship and Ongoing Support
The counselors at NEW went beyond just offering career advice, they became my mentors. They provided continuous encouragement, checked in on my progress, and ensured that I had the resources I needed to succeed. Their guidance extended beyond job searching to include insights on professional networking, career advancement strategies, and even emotional support during moments of self-doubt.
Moreover, they connected me with valuable job opportunities, and potential positions at organizations. Each recommendation and opportunity brought me closer to achieving my career goals in Canada.
Looking Ahead
With the support of Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, I have made significant strides in rebuilding my career. My resume now reflects strong Canadian work experience, my confidence in job interviews has grown, and I have established meaningful connections within the professional community.
The journey is ongoing, and I remain open to new opportunities where I can apply my skills and expertise. Given the chance, I would be honored to continue working with or contributing to an organization like NEW, as they have been instrumental in shaping my career path.
Gratitude and Appreciation
I am deeply grateful to everyone at Newcomer Women’s Services Toronto, including the CEO, officials, and my counselor Samina Nayla, for their unwavering support. Their commitment to empowering newcomers like me is truly life-changing. Through their programs, I have not only gained employment skills but also the confidence to pursue my career ambitions in Canada.
Before joining the program, I could hardly communicate effectively to express myself. However, thanks to the micro-credential programs, internship, and mentorship at NEW, my transformation has been incredible. I now speak with confidence, present myself professionally, and feel empowered to navigate the job market successfully.
To any newcomer facing career challenges, I highly recommend seeking support from organizations like NEW. They provide not just resources but also a community that uplifts and empowers you to succeed. My journey is a testament to the impact of their work, and I look forward to the continued growth and opportunities that lie ahead.
