Language Instruction for Newcomer Seniors to Canada (LINC)

In 2009-2010 NEW initiated a LINC Seniors class. The program grew out of an initiative for seniors offered in the St. James Town and Teesdale neighbourhoods.

NEW’ senior-specific class is a first in Toronto!

-The curriculum integrates senior specific issues of preventative health care and nutrition home care, calling 911 and elder abuse

-Teaching methods to facilitate language needs for seniors (many of whom do not have mother tongue literacy)

-Small class size of 10 to facilitate confidence and learning

-Responsive to needs of seniors through individual case management

-Social supports and intergenerational art activities with children
